Poinsettia Care Tips: Flowering for Longer

Poinsettias are one of the most iconic Christmas plants — bright, bold, festive and full of colour. But although they look effortless in store, they can be a little fussy once you bring them home.
With the right care, though, your Poinsettia can keep its vibrant bracts for weeks — even months.
Here are our top tips to help your plant stay healthy and colourful throughout the festive season and beyond.

1. Choose a Healthy Plant from the Start
The secret to long-lasting colour begins before you even leave the shop. Look for:
-
Bright, evenly coloured bracts
-
Fresh green leaves underneath
-
No drooping or yellowing
-
A plant that feels full and balanced
Avoid any plant placed near draughty shop doors — sudden temperature drops shorten its lifespan.
2. Protect It on the Journey Home
Poinsettias hate the cold. Even a short chill can cause leaves to drop.
Always:
-
Ask for a sleeve or paper wrap
-
Keep the plant covered on the way to the car
-
Avoid leaving it in a cold vehicle
A warm welcome home makes all the difference.
3. Find the Perfect Spot Indoors
Poinsettias prefer:
-
Bright, indirect light
-
A room temperature of 18–21°C
-
A stable environment with no draughts
Keep them away from:
-
Radiators
-
Fireplaces
-
Cold windowsills
-
Frequently opened doors
They don’t like sudden temperature changes, so choose a calm, cosy corner.
4. Water Carefully (Not Too Much!)
Overwatering is the number one reason poinsettias fade early.
Water only when the top of the soil feels dry and ensure the pot drains well.
Tips:
-
Remove decorative foil before watering
-
Let excess water drain away — never leave it sitting
-
Avoid splashing water on the leaves
Consistent but moderate watering keeps the plant stress-free.
5. Keep Humidity Balanced
Indoor heating dries out the air, which poinsettias dislike.
To help:
-
Mist lightly around the plant (not directly on bracts)
-
Place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water
-
Keep away from hot airflow
A little extra humidity goes a long way.
6. Rotate for Even Colour
Turn your poinsettia every few days so it receives even light on all sides.
This prevents bending, stretching and uneven colour development.
7. Feed After the Festive Season
During Christmas, your plant doesn’t need feeding.
But from January onwards, a light all-purpose houseplant feed every 2–4 weeks keeps it healthy and encourages new growth.
With just a little attention, your poinsettia can thrive far beyond Christmas.
Avoid the cold, water gently, keep away from draughts, and give it a bright, cosy home — and you’ll enjoy those festive colours for many weeks to come.
