Sustainable Gardening Tips from Our Nursery Experts

At Flowerland, we’ve been growing plants for generations, and over the years we’ve learned a thing or two about how to garden in a way that’s not only beautiful but also kind to the planet. I’d love to share some of my top tips for sustainable gardening — the way we do it in our nursery, and how you can bring it into your own garden.
1. Go Local with Your Plants
Whenever possible, choose plants grown close to home. Here at Flowerland, we grow a lot of our plants right in our nurseries, so they’re strong, healthy, and ready to thrive in your garden. Locally grown plants reduce “plant miles,” which is great for the environment — and they’ll settle in much faster too.
2. Make Your Own Compost
One of my favourite ways to give plants a boost is with compost. Leaves, prunings, and kitchen scraps can all be turned into nutrient-rich soil that feeds your plants naturally. We do this at the nursery all the time, and trust me — it makes a huge difference.
3. Water Smarter, Not Harder
Saving water is easier than you think! Collect rainwater, water in the early morning or evening, and use watering cans where you can. Plants grown locally, like the ones we have in our Grow Club, often need less water because they’re already adapted to the climate — a win for you and the planet.
4. Feed Your Plants Responsibly
Too much chemical fertilizer isn’t great for soil or wildlife. We use careful, responsible feeding in our nursery and rely on biodynamic and organic practices wherever possible. At home, try slow-release or organic fertilizers to keep your garden healthy and happy.

5. Reuse and Recycle
From pots to trays to growing media, we reuse and recycle as much as we can. At home, you can do the same: repurpose containers, upcycle plant supports, and get creative. Every little bit helps!
6. Plant at the Right Time
Timing really is everything. March and April are perfect for many spring plants — they’ll get a strong start and need less fuss later. That’s why our Grow Club in Iver is such a hit: you can pick young plants, grow them on, and really get hands-on with your gardening.

Gardening sustainably doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small, make a few mindful choices, and enjoy watching your plants thrive — healthier plants, a greener garden, and a happier planet.
