Everything You Need to Know About Planting Bulbs This Autumn

Autumn is one of the best times to start thinking about next year's garden. While your summer plants are still putting on a show, it's time to get spring bulbs into the ground and look forward to a garden full of colour after winter.

But which bulbs should you plant, when should you plant them and what happens if you forget? We've answered some of the most common bulb questions below.

Which bulbs should I plant in autumn?

There are plenty to choose from! Some popular spring-flowering bulbs include:

Daffodils – cheerful, reliable and great for naturalising in lawns and borders.

Tulips – perfect for adding bold colour and height.

Crocuses – small but spectacular, often providing some of the earliest colour of the year.

Alliums – tall architectural flowers that look fantastic planted in groups.

Hyacinths – beautiful, fragrant flowers for borders and containers.

Snowdrops – delicate early flowers that are a welcome sight at the end of winter.

 When should I plant bulbs?

Many spring bulbs can be planted from early autumn onwards. Daffodils, crocuses and alliums can generally be planted from September, while tulips are often best planted a little later in autumn, particularly in October and November.

The exact timing isn't something to worry about too much — the important thing is getting them planted before the ground becomes too cold or waterlogged.

Where should I plant them?

Most spring bulbs prefer a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil.

You can plant them in borders, containers, window boxes or even naturalise some varieties in lawns and grassy areas.

Can I grow bulbs in pots?

Absolutely! Pots are a brilliant option if you're short on space or want to create a seasonal display.

Try combining bulbs that flower at different times so you can enjoy colour for longer. You can also layer bulbs in larger containers, with later-flowering varieties planted above earlier ones.

How deep should I plant them?

As a general rule, plant bulbs at around two to three times their own height, with the pointed end facing upwards. Always check the instructions on the bulb packet, as planting depth can vary between varieties.

Do bulbs need watering?

Give newly planted bulbs a good watering if the soil is dry. After that, autumn rainfall will usually provide much of what they need, although containers may need checking more regularly.

What if I've forgotten to plant them?

Don't panic! If you still have bulbs later in autumn, it's usually better to plant them rather than leave them sitting around. Just make sure the bulbs are firm and healthy before planting.
