Mulching Explained: The Secret to Moisture Retention

Mulching Explained: The Secret to Moisture Retention

As the summer temperatures rise, one of the best things you can do for your garden is apply a layer of mulch. It's a simple job that can make a huge difference, helping your plants stay healthy, reducing the need for frequent watering, and keeping your garden looking its best throughout the warmer months.

Why mulch?

Mulch acts as a protective blanket over the soil. It helps lock in moisture, keeping the ground cooler for longer and reducing water evaporation during hot weather. It also suppresses weeds, meaning your plants don't have to compete for valuable water and nutrients.

Whether you're caring for flower beds, vegetable patches, or containers, mulching is an easy way to give your plants the best chance of thriving during summer.

Choosing the right mulch

There are plenty of mulching materials to choose from, each with its own benefits.

Compost – adds nutrients to the soil while improving its structure and helping retain moisture.

Bark chips – a long-lasting option that's perfect for borders, shrubs, and around trees while giving beds a neat, finished appearance.

Wood chippings – ideal for larger garden areas and pathways, helping to reduce weeds and protect the soil.

Straw – an excellent choice for vegetable gardens, especially around strawberries, courgettes, and tomatoes.

Leaf mould – a natural, moisture-retaining mulch that's perfect for improving soil health over time.

How to apply mulch

Mulching couldn't be easier.

Start by removing any weeds and giving the soil a good watering if it's dry. Spread your chosen mulch evenly over the surface, aiming for a layer around 5–8cm deep.

Leave a small gap around the stems of plants and the trunks of trees to allow air to circulate and help prevent rot.

Applying mulch in the morning or after rainfall helps trap moisture in the soil, giving your plants lasting protection throughout the day.

The benefits you'll notice

A well-mulched garden offers more than just healthier plants.

  • Soil stays moist for longer, even during warm weather.
  • You'll spend less time watering.
  • Fewer weeds will appear throughout the season.
  • Plant roots stay cooler during heatwaves.
  • Borders look tidy and well-maintained.

Our top tip for summer

If a heatwave is on the way, water your garden thoroughly before adding mulch. The mulch will help seal that moisture into the soil, meaning your plants can stay hydrated for much longer.

It's one of the simplest gardening jobs you can do, but the results can be impressive—especially during long periods of warm, dry weather.
